New Photo and Personal Story

Thank you to everyone who joined workshops this fall, making it a success and, more importantly, truly enjoyable. From the cool stormy Oregon coast to the warmer-than-usual North Cascades, there was a little bit of everything. I finished up for the season a week ago, giving me some much-needed office time as I dream of snowy days ahead.

I want to call out my good friend David Cobb, with whom I have spent many miles on the road and shared lodging over the last couple of years co-leading workshops as I transitioned back into the workshop space full-time after a decade-long hiatus. It's been a lot of fun working with him, and I wish him the best as he starts to retire from workshops... but not entirely yet. We still have some together outside of the PNW coming up through 2025!

I was pondering a slightly different way of sharing a new photo regularly. While this isn't groundbreaking, I figured I would give it a go and see if it sticks. I will post a Photo of the Week on the journal page of my website, which I intend to post most weeks. If you want to get notified that a new one is posted please update your subscriber preferences at the bottom of this newsletter by selecting Photo of the Week. The forest photo above is the first one. You can read more about it here, including a personal story behind it along with photographic successes and challenges that came with taking and processing it.

Books, Videos, and Podcasts

What I am reading, watching, or listening to that I feel others might find value in.

  • The Secret Knowledge of Water by Craig Childs - There Are Two Easy Ways to Die in the Desert: Thirst and Drowning. Side note - congrats to Eric Bennett, who had Childs write the foreword for his new book which I look forward to viewing.
  • The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt - How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure
  • AIR directed by Ben Affleck - I watched my fair share of NBA games in the past and live near where Nike was born, for me it was a must-see.
  • 2023 Comedy Wildlife Awards - If you need a laugh this should do the trick.

"Butterscotch Burst" It might be only about six weeks since my last newsletter, yet there are several updates to share with all of you. Even before those updates, there have already been a couple of eventful trips this year. In January, I headed to Cuba for a non-photo-focused journey that still allowed for some photography, and since my last newsletter, I have put together a small collection of photos and a blog post about the trip. It was certainly different than my usual work (which I...

Taste The Sky

"Taste The Sky" I have adjusted back to the cooler winter weather of PNW after a trip to Cuba last week. It was not a photo-specific trip, but I took a few photos and have thoughts to share about the overall experience, which I will put in a post on my website soon. It's not like any other place I have visited, in good and challenging ways. This coming weekend is the annual Out of Chicago LIVE virtual conference. More details are below regarding this live experience. Sessions are not...

"Golden Oasis" With fall adventures and workshops now in the rearview mirror, I am settling into a winter routine that includes more time at home with the family, on the mountain, and of course, planning for future workshops. I wrapped up fall with a couple of trips, including fun-filled camping in Southern Utah to finish scouting for the Escalante workshop. The above photo is from that trip. Hint hint: It's available for signup, and you can read more about it below. I also enjoyed the annual...
