Escalante Workshop Announcement and Podcast Interview

"Golden Oasis"
With fall adventures and workshops now in the rearview mirror, I am settling into a winter routine that includes more time at home with the family, on the mountain, and of course, planning for future workshops.
I wrapped up fall with a couple of trips, including fun-filled camping in Southern Utah to finish scouting for the Escalante workshop. The above photo is from that trip. Hint hint: It's available for signup, and you can read more about it below. I also enjoyed the annual tradition of getting most of the Photo Cascadia team together, this year in the Eastern Sierra region. I say most because it's rare to get all seven of us together in one place. Being in this line of work means having events blocking our calendars more than a year in advance. Some years, herding cats can be easier than getting our crew together yet it's always worth it. It was my first trip to the area and one where we experienced a little bit of all weather and light, including what felt like non-stop glorious light the last ~500 miles just getting there. If we had stopped every time we said "wow" or "oooo and aahh," we wouldn't have made it halfway that day.
This will be my last newsletter for the year; with that, I wish you a happy holiday season and a fantastic new year! I truly appreciate all of you, whether you are a workshop participant, friends in the business, or simply enjoy seeing new photography and whatever else I share here. 2025 looks to be another great year that I am looking forward to. Hopefully, I will see you then!
Colors of Escalante Workshop
In early 2023, I was paired up with Eric Bennett as an instructor for the Out of Olympic conference. We weren't sick of hanging out after a 5-day conference (including a 5hr drive each way) and enjoyed working together, so we have been planning to do a workshop ever since. Not to mention, I have always been a fan of Eric's work. If you haven't seen his work from the deserts of Utah, you definitely will want to spend some time on his website. After much planning, I am happy to announce we are offering a workshop in the southern area of Grand Staircase-Escalante from Nov 4 to 8, 2025, based out of Kanab, Utah. This region is filled with photographic beauty and, in early November, can have a splash of yellow and orange fall foliage color to add to it. I could go on, yet I will let the workshop listing take care of the details for those interested.
My friend Eric Bennett (he is getting plenty of airplay in this newsletter!) and a few of his beverage connoisseur friends host a fun casual talk show called Brews n' Views to which I was recently invited as a guest. No shocker, as the name suggests, each person talks about the beverages they are drinking that evening (usually beer), yet most of the time is spent discussing specific photos we like. I selected some photos of other photogs, and the hosts selected some of mine. Most episodes are 2 to 3 hours, and I thought there was no way my episode would be that long, but time went fast because it was fun, so it's a long one. If you have 2+ hours you can't fill, fill your glass and give it a watch!
Quick Updates
Redwoods #2 - I rarely decide to do a second Best of the Northwest workshop at the same location during the same year. Next year is the exception. Recently, I added a second Redwoods Forest workshop to help meet demand. While it's close to being sold out, a few spots remain. This newly added one will be right after the first, from May 19 to 22, 2025.
Out of Olympic - I recently was part of a free webinar with some of the other 2025 Olympic instructors talking about all things related to coastal and forest photography. You can watch it here. And if you are interested in the conference, there are a few spots left. Code KLEIN250OLYMPIC will get you $250 off through today, Dec 13.
2025 Photo Cascadia Calendars - We have four different ones: Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington. You can get them here.
Books, Videos, and Podcasts
What I am reading, watching, or listening to that I feel others might find of interest.
Wild Lightby Erik Stensland - Luck of timing, I finally ran into Erik at a small, quiet campground during my Utah trip this year. I met him through NPN many years ago when we were both in our early years of photography. It was really fun to chat life and photography by the campfire for a couple nights. This book is filled with beauty covering all seasons in Rocky Mountain National Park. If you are in Estes, CO, check out his gallery, which I hope to do myself on a future trip.
Undammedby Patagonia Films - Most of us have seen the news that the Klamath River is running dam-free again after the largest dam removal in the country, and it is not surprising it was a long road to get here. This ~20 min film follows Amy Bowers Cordalis from the Yurok tribe as one of those people instrumental in helping to bring down the dams.
Co-Intelligence Living and Working with AIby Ethan Mollick - While there is a lot out there on AI, this is a good read about how it can be used to our benefit now and likely into the future. Outside of my daily shouts of "Hey Siri!" my regular use of AI is limited. I also know that will change, as it will for all of us, as it becomes more ingrained in how we work and live day-to-day.
Funny Wildlife - Lastly, if you need a good laugh, viewing the finalists for the Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards should do the trick!
If you enjoy this newsletter, I would appreciate it if you share it with your family or friends. As always, thank you for your time and support!

"Butterscotch Burst" It might be only about six weeks since my last newsletter, yet there are several updates to share with all of you. Even before those updates, there have already been a couple of eventful trips this year. In January, I headed to Cuba for a non-photo-focused journey that still allowed for some photography, and since my last newsletter, I have put together a small collection of photos and a blog post about the trip. It was certainly different than my usual work (which I...
"Taste The Sky" I have adjusted back to the cooler winter weather of PNW after a trip to Cuba last week. It was not a photo-specific trip, but I took a few photos and have thoughts to share about the overall experience, which I will put in a post on my website soon. It's not like any other place I have visited, in good and challenging ways. This coming weekend is the annual Out of Chicago LIVE virtual conference. More details are below regarding this live experience. Sessions are not...
"Just Breathe" Hello! It's been a whole season since my last newsletter, and in this case, that means there are many exciting updates to share in this full newsletter. Spring started with a whirlwind of activity: Several workshops, a brief international trip, and two weeks exploring the Great Plains that included leading a tour and scouting for the next one – and that was just the photography and travel side of things. At home, we celebrated a high school graduation. Major milestones like...
