This will be my third time presenting at Out of Chicago LIVE! I keep coming back because they are fun, and there really is no other event quite like it. This is the only event of its kind where you can learn from one of the largest groups of instructors ever assembled, hang out with photographers from around the world, and be a part of the Out of Chicago community. Whether it's virtual or in-person, Out of Chicago does a top-notch job coordinating and putting on conferences. I am doing two new presentations this year. My main presentation is Photographs That Tell a Story, where I talk about what you can assume, photos that tell a story, and what helps one photo do that better than another. The many examples I share will be across genres, not just nature. Many I have yet to share, new and old. I will also cover aspects like titling our photos. My other session will be on Focus Stacking, which is part presentation and part processing. This is a good process to have in your photography toolbox. If you don't use it today, this session should be worthwhile. If you are able to join us, I am excited to see you there! Even if you can't join us live, everyone signing up will get access to watch the recordings for 12 months.
2024 was so last year...I didn't share either of these in my last newsletter of 2024 since they weren't published at the time. Even though we are a short way into 2025, I figured I would put them here for those who are interested. 2024 Rewind Journal Post - My yearly recap, including many of my favorite photos. Additionally, my blog posts now have commenting enabled. Photo Cascadia Year in Photography - The annual Photo Cascadia highlight video. Workshops and WebinarsThe following workshops have only one opening each...
Books, Videos, and PodcastsWhat I am reading, watching, or listening to that I feel others might find of interest.
If you enjoy this newsletter, I would appreciate it if you share it with your family or friends. As always, thank you for your time and support!

"Canyon Flames" It's a little later than usual for me to get out my rewind blog post for the prior year yet I carved out time to make it happen. Even today in late January it feels like the year is still just getting started being only 6% through, despite being well past wishing folks Happy New Year. It was nice to slow down during the holidays and enjoy time with family and friends. I hope all of you were able to as well. I am likely in the minority not dreading the darkness coming early and...
"Cloud Shifts" Fall, the season filled with vibrant foliage and mild temperatures across much of the U.S. While those warm tones are nice, I find myself even more excited for the cool crisp air that comes with the change of seasons. If you’re lucky, you can chase fall color for months, beginning in Alaska in late August and following it all the way down to Arizona by November, basically “falling south” for fall. Although I didn’t travel to that extent, I was fortunate to enjoy a fairly wide...
"Butterscotch Burst" It might be only about six weeks since my last newsletter, yet there are several updates to share with all of you. Even before those updates, there have already been a couple of eventful trips this year. In January, I headed to Cuba for a non-photo-focused journey that still allowed for some photography, and since my last newsletter, I have put together a small collection of photos and a blog post about the trip. It was certainly different than my usual work (which I...
